Description

The book is a hilarious romp through his life, from how he became a social media phenomenon at 14 to his hustler spirit and spilling the tea around cancel culture, heartbreak, and lessons on how to love yourself (oh, and that time he lost his virginity at Disneyland). You're That B*tch welcomes you into Bretman Rock's world—from how his childhood in the Philippines, his family, Filipino culture, and being a first-generation immigrant helped shape him into who he is today.

I highly recommend reading Bretman’s biography, as it is so full of warmth, humour, and important life lessons. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). The minimal editing made listening to the audiobook more conversational, and he spoke as if he was just doing a longer Instagram live. Like, how one of my biggest accomplishments and blessings in life was not fucking anyone from my high school— I didn’t date anyone the entire four years.

Since “he/him/his” pronouns are used in his biography and in the book jacket blurb, those are the pronouns I will use throughout this review. My favorite kinds of videos to watch right now are Business Insider and real estate shows, and I’m excited for my audience to see that. He made history as the first openly gay man to pose for a cover of Playboy , in 2019; was the star of a YouTube reality series, 30 Days With: Bretman Rock; collaborated with Crocs on a line of footwear; launched his own eyewear collection with Dime Optics; and now the social media star has written a book. in the relatively small pantheon of queer-of-color coming-of-age memoirs, it’s a unique perspective on emerging as a young public gay figure. Bretman will add "author" to his seemingly never-ending bio thanks to his new book, and you'll absolutely want to pick it up for a peek into the life of the influencer, mogul, icon, makeup genius, etc.

I’m gonna talk more in depth about growing up in the Philippines, all of the Filipino cultural traditions and superstitions in-grained in me from an early age, being left behind with my dad when my mom and siblings moved to Hawaii, and how I learned how to speak English and become an entertainer by watching reality shows like A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila and America’s Next Top Model. Hilarious and earnest, this collection of essays, how-tos, and more goes far beyond what we know of Bretman Rock from social media. I'm so glad I decided to read this, it goes into details about the life and lessons learned along the way in a very humorous and easy-to-read way.Throughout the memoir, Rock uses both “he/him/his” and “she/her/hers” pronouns and clarifies his lack of preference. As someone who has been raised around many powerful independent woman I really relate to the respect he has for all the woman he in his life. Another takeaway from each chapter was the meaningful and heartfelt lessons Bretman gives readers at the end. With his heartfelt lessons at the end of each chapter, he truly makes you realise that everyone is a human being at the end of the day, and not everything is what it seems to be in front of the camera. Finally, I loved the inclusion of the little tips at the end of each chapter; it made it feel like this was partially a self-help book.

I often found myself laughing, reflecting, and feeling a genuine connection to the author's experiences and perspectives. These essays are about not fitting in but learning how to not give a fux, how to exude effortless confidence and win people over with charm and humor, being authentic and original, and turning your fantasies into reality the Bretman Rock way—that is, doing the least while looking the most. Throughout the book, I found myself feeling uplifted and motivated to become the best version of myself. His stories are such an honest look at family life including the bad things that come even in a good family. Bretman Rock has always been real, whether on social media or his reality shows, but this might be his most personal project yet. Each chapter reveals a new side to the social media star, cracking open a chamber of memories and allowing readers an unadulterated look inside.
