About this deal

If you're interested in starting a career in machine learning or scientific computing, this is a must have on your shelf. I believe this textbook did quite well in this aspect, and I could understand most of theorems without much difficulty. Extend your professional development and meet your students where they are with free weekly Digital Learning NOW webinars.

Lay is also a coauthor of several mathematics texts, including Introduction to Functional Analysis with Angus E. The only justification given is that it allows us to determine when a matrix is invertible, but we already learned how to do that by row reduction in the first chapter. The best feature of this book, in my opinion, is their reference to previous theorems and results when it comes to more advanced theorems. That said, this book does have ambitions of being relevant, if not exciting, and it is certainly intriguing and worthwhile to see how it is that the book encourages readers to pay attention to the relevance of its subjects, even if that subject is not the most exciting or interesting thing in the world. The purpose is to have a forum in which general doubts about the processes of publication in the journal, experiences and other issues derived from the publication of papers are resolved. Chapter 3 teaches about matrix operations such as matrix multiplication, matrix inversion and transposing matrices. Please Read Notes: Brand New, International Softcover Edition, Printed in black and white pages, minor self wear on the cover or pages, Sale restriction may be printed on the book, but Book name, contents, and author are exactly same as Hardcover Edition. The chapter on eigenvalues is relatively weak; it covers all the techniques, but the applications are limited to dynamical systems and the interest is in taking high powers of a matrix.

Strang is more fun to read, too: Strang really loves linear algebra and it shows, while Lay is very dry (except for one isolated joke: a sight gag in the discussion of linear transformations involving a sheared sheep). Also, this books give so many applications of Linear Algebra in different fields which works as motivation to explore further. And I can add that it's a very handy reference to breeze through when you need to brush up on basics for a more advanced course that relies on this stuff.

The book revisits those concepts throughout, ensuring you do not become overwhelmed when abstract concepts are introduced, as you progress with your learning. By combining trusted author content with digital tools and a flexible platform, MyLab Math personalises the learning experience and improves results for each student.

I had to read “Linear Algebra and Its Applications” by David Lay for the Linear Algebra 1 class in my first semester in University. The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'.In 1994, he was given one of the Mathematical Association of America's Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. Since they are fundamental to the study of linear algebra, students' understanding of these concepts is vital to their mastery of the subject.

Written by a true master of the subject and explained in a way that even non-mathematicans can understand. Lay is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the International Linear Algebra Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Sigma Xi, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Since 1992, he has served several terms on the national board of the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. I would recommend supplementing learnings from this book with materials that could allow for a better conceptual understanding of the constructs of the linear algebraic system, such as 3Blue1Brown's Essence of Linear Algebra YouTube video series. The Editorial team at Pearson has worked closely with educators around the world to include content, which is especially relevant to students outside the United States. The author Gilbert Strang is an authoritative figure on the subject and I am fortunate to have studied his MIT ocw course. I didn’t find the explanations particularly easy to follow (compared to a book that doesn’t necessarily want to be completely rigorous everywhere), so the only appeal that might have for some is that it lists a fair amount of applications. More often than not, it does a good job at translating the formula to a sensible sentence, and throughout reading this book it made me realize that mathematical formula isn't more than a language. Since then he has supported his brother David in refining and expanding the scope of this popular linear algebra text, including writing most of Chapters 8 and 9.
