About this deal

As an example, our Netgear router is set to WEP 64bit strength using a HEX key "ABCDE12345" in the "1" position. Below is our original review, updated in March 2017 whenY-Cam launched a third-generation Outdoor HD Pro. It’s still a 720p camera, but it has a new lens with a 100-degree field of view that lets you The resolution indicates the size of image that is captured by the camera, the larger the image the clearer the image will appear. Higher resolution cameras are ideal when viewing footage on a large TV screen. Lower resolution cameras are perfect for viewing high definition video on your smartphone or tablet. When you access the camera from a mobile device, the lag is much worse—almost a minute behind real-time. It's easy to see the lag, because HomeMonitor places a time-stamp on all of its video feeds and stored clips. Thankfully, the Y-Cam HomeMonitor indoor camera's traffic won't kill your network, as it only uploads when motion is detected.

You can access all of the alarm settings and features via the Y-cam App (available for iOS and Android). The system can be activated and deactivated using your SmartPhone.** The Y-cam Bullet is weatherproof to an IP-66 rated, so can be installed inside or out, making it a versatile camera for any condition. Equipped with infrared night vision from 24 IR LEDs, see in the dark up to 10m/40ft, even in pitch darkness for 24/7 protection. Motion detection is all well and good, but what if something happens in a few seconds, will the HomeMonitor be able to record that? The people at Y-cam have thought of this and have made a camera that is constantly recording on a 10-second loop. If any movement is detected then the HomeMonitor HD sends the footage directly to the cloud, including a few seconds before the trigger event. Before we start there are a few additional factors we need to consider when moving from a wired to a wireless connection. Without additional configuration, your camera will not connect to your wireless network. There are three main areas to consider, let's look at each in turn: You’ll obviously need a mount to place the camera in the appropriate position and the HomeMonitor HD duly obliges with a sturdy metal L-shaped one. Two screws hold it to your wall – two 1-inch screws are provided, but you’ll need your own wall plugs – and a ball joint allows you to rotate it to the optimal position. The camera and mount together are light, so the supplied screws are more than adequate. The new Alexa skill is great to see. Using just your voice, you can set the alarm; and you can disable it, too, speaking out a PIN that you set. Inside your home, this feature is possibly less useful, and using the keyfob or app probably make more sense. But, if you’re using Y-Cam Protect for an external building (my garden office is protected with one), Alexa integration is a smart way of being able to turn the alarm on or off. Should I buy the Y-Cam Protect Alarm System? Our User Manual is an essential read to get the most out of your Y-cam and learn about all of its extended features. iSpyConnect has no affiliation, connection, or association with Y-cam’s products. The connection details provided here are crowd sourced from the community and may be incomplete, inaccurate or both. We provide no warranty that you will be successful using these connection URLs or that Y-cam products are compatible with iSpy. The second con – if it is a con – is that there’s no alternative choice of storage. You can’t put a memory card inside the camera as you can with the The Y-cam Plus subscription provides a whole host of additional benefits to help you monitor and secure your home. With a Y-cam Plus subscription, the integrated sim card is activated and will ensure that your alarm remains connected when your internet is down and will also send text and phone call alarm notifications. Y-cam Plus will record 30 days of alarm and video activity logs and fully managed 30 days video storage when using Y-cam indoor or outdoor cameras.

As of a more recent update, Y-Cam Evo cameras can now be integrated into the system; when an alarm is triggered, the cameras are set to start recording for up to 15 minutes, or until the siren is deactivated. This requires a Plus subscription. The night mode was a little more hit and miss. Faces caught with the camera in night-cam mode have a grainy quality and won’t be much help to police unless the thief was insanely close to the Evo – though being fair to Y-Cam, this is true of all the home-monitoring cameras I’ve tested. Works over Wi-Fi b/g/n, Ethernet, or Power over Ethernet (PoE) 802.3af. Works with leading software, NAS and NVR drives, like Synology, ASUSTOR and QNAP. Record to any NAS with NAS-Ready™. Access from PC, Mac, Linux, Smartphones and Tablets and more. For this guide, we will assume that the camera is configured and you can access the live image when it is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable (wired connection). The fact that you get seven days’ worth of free encrypted cloud storage for captured footage on the Evo is fantastic, and I wish more companies would follow Y-Cam’s example – all too often home-monitoring solutions, such as the SwannOne Smart Home Control Kit, place cloud storage behind expensive paywalls. Finally, there’s an optional solar-powered external siren, capable of blasting out at 104dB alarm to warn of a break-in. It’s something that was sorely missing from the initial release. Its availability makes the Y-Cam Protect a much more fully-featured alarm system, and also signposts to would-be burglars that your home is protected. If you need it, there are dummy boxes to fit around your home, too.

Update: This review and its score relate to the original proposition. Y-Cam has since discontinued its free cloud storage subscriptions claiming they are financially “unsustainable”. With Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), you can connect the Y-cam Bullet to your network in no time – no cable required. Wi-Fi N provides faster and wider connectivity ensuring support for smooth video streaming, even at high definition resolutions. As of 3 October 2023, the above cameras will no longer provide a live stream, and (if applicable) record video on motion detection. Therefore, it is necessary to give you six months’ notice that your Y-Cam service will be ending. The camera controls aren’t the most advanced available, but they’re still pretty decent. You can set a specific motion zone to monitor, decide if it will activate and push an alert when it detects a loud noise, and choose if it will capture footage in HD or standard definition. Y-Cam has made a few tweaks to improve image quality – you can see the difference in the screengrabs below. We’re also told that a firmware update for all Outdoor HD cameras is on the way. This will include a much more sophisticated detection algorithm – hopefully much like the Turning on Home mode sees the Hub belting out, “Y-Cam Protect Home mode armed.” It’s a little loud and could wake up anyone sleeping at home; a simple low-volume beep would be neater. The alarm can be set to create two different zones allowing you to arm one or both zones. This can be especially useful if you decide to split the upstairs and downstairs of a property into two zones. While away from the property you would activate both zones and during the night you could activate only the downstairs zone. The HomeMonitor HD is a motion- and sound-sensing camera, which means – apologies for describing the bleeding obvious – that it only starts recording and sending video and audio to the cloud when it senses movement.
