Batman Gambit: Zhuge Liang's Empty Fort strategy managed to scare away Sima Yi's army of around 50,000 men. Zhuge Liang even pointed out how bad a plan it was after Sima Yi retreated as it only works if the deceived general is one who overthinks. With the support of Kongming's Noble Phantasm, the Chu Shi Biao(Memorial for the Expedition), the chain summoning selected Sima Yi, as someone with ties to Kongming, and Reines, a person related to El-Melloi II.

While Sima Yi was genuinely in a catatonic state for a time, he spent years unresponsive and bedridden after Chunhua's death. During that time, Cao Shuang's attention moved away from the Sima family as he deemed them no longer a threat so they could continue plotting their eventual coup. note Historically, the Incident at Gaoping Tombs took place about two years after Chunhua's death. The Coup: Years of meticulous planning and close calls results in Sima Yi leading a revolt to remove Cao Shuang from power. As the illusory Sun and Moon appear from the horizon, the opponent's forte would be rendered useless, while their hidden weaknesses would be revealed.

Battle of Wits: Effectively the entire story for most of the series, with Sima Yi's opponent changing as the years and conflicts go on. Sima Lun assumed regency over Emperor Hui, but delegated most of his power over to Sun Xiu. Lun and Sun Xiu plotted to take the throne by following the precedent of the Jin dynasty's foundation. They awarded their family members and allies with high-ranking positions and noble titles, while also posthumously honoring Sima Yu and recruiting famed individuals into their administration to win the people's support. Yang Xianrong, a distant relative of Sun Xiu, was installed as the new empress of Emperor Hui. Sima Wang succeeded his uncle Sima Lang. He had four sons: Sima Yi, Sima Hong, Sima Zheng and Sima Mao. [41] Sima Huang [ edit ] Cao Rui's paternity issue is a nod to the same issue historically, but with Yuan Xi (Lady Zhen's first husband) as the suspected father instead of Cao Zhi. The series is divided into two parts, with part one focusing on his early career under the warlord Cao Cao and his role in assisting Cao Pi in the power struggle with his brother, Cao Zhi, to succeed Cao Cao.

Sima Lang's in-series resemblance to Dong Zhuo's late son is a nod to the historical Dong Zhuo's observation that Lang was of the same age as said late son.

Yang Huiyu was the daughter of Yang Chen and Lady Cai. She had two brothers: Yang Cheng (elder) and Yang Hu (younger). Yang Chen's father was Yang Xu. Lady Cai had a sister, Cai Wenji, and their father was Cai Yong. Yang Huiyu did not have any sons with Sima Shi. [15] [16] It is not known if they had any daughters. Sima Yan, Zhao's son and the future Emperor Wu of Jin, was also not depicted. Historically, he would be about 11 when his grandmother Zhang Chunhua died.

Guo Zhao's character was based on Guo Nüwang, who became the first empress of Wei after heavily undermining Zhen Ji's position as Cao Pi's favorite wife. Lady Guo in the series shares a cooperative, sisterly bond with Lady Zhen. In the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering there is a card named "Sima Yi, Wei Field Marshal", in the Portal Three Kingdoms set. Empress Jia enlisted the help of Sima Liang and the Prince of Chu, Sima Wei to overthrow Yang Jun. Liang was reluctant to help her, but Wei agreed and left his fief for the capital, Luoyang with his troops. On the night of 23 April 291, Empress Jia and her allies sent out an imperial edict calling for the deposal of Yang Jun and occupied the gates leading to his residence. Yang Jun was caught by surprise and was unable to decide on his next move. Empress Dowager Yang Zhi tried to get the soldiers to turn on Empress Jia, but failed and implicated herself in the process. Cao Chong's note that Sima Yi closely resembled his father (during the former's re-enactment of the recruitment scene at the stables) is a nod to the two men's elevation as emperors posthumously.

Tempting Fate: While The Chessmaster: The series is littered with them, given the constant warring political factions that support Wei. He had three sons and a daughter with Zhang Chunhua: Sima Shi, Sima Zhao, [6] Sima Gan and Princess Nanyang (personal name unknown). [6] [7] Princess Nanyang married Xun Yun's son Xun Yi.
