About this deal

Any air dry clay will work. If you want a light weight type of clay (great for kids) I recommend the Crayola brand. However, I used the DAS air dry clay since it is more like the type of clay used for pottery and ceramics. It is heavier and more substantial – and lots of fun to work with! As a final note—store air dry clay in an air-tight container in a cool, dark place. I personally like to buy clay in smaller amounts that I think I’ll probably use up for one craft. We made a few different things: pinch pots, clay pots, handprint ornaments, and a few other things. To make the clay pots, I used a small plastic cache pot to roll along rolled-out clay. This told me where to cut and worked pretty well!

Air dry clay is not as messy as other types of clay, such as polymer clay. This makes it a good choice for children and adults who are not comfortable working with messy materials. Besides using them as the obvious (as ornaments on hanging on your Christmas tree), here are some other ideas for how to use the finished products. Low and behold – I discovered this amazing air dry clay from DAS in both terracotta color and white! I was delighted and couldn’t wait to get started. Remember to be mindful of the aerosol varnish’s finish. I am using a gloss varnish spray, but they come in different sheens. Look for a matte sheen if you want it to be the most natural looking.

After seeing some these incredible projects below, I hope you are inspired to get to your local craft supply store and buy some clay! What is the best kind of Air Dry Clayto use? Well it’s been a while since I have done a good old fashioned kid craft, but I thought it was high time to introduce my daughter to air dry clay! I loved working with air dry clay when I was younger—there are so many things you can make with it, and it’s EASY. Also, the clay is EXCELLENT at taking detailed impressions, and is far better at retaining fine detail than other products I have used.Use a combination of multimedia materials, crafting tools and your hands to mold air-dry clay into the design or shape you desire. Howeverrr…I decided to try to bake it because I didn’t want to wait 1–2 days for the creations to dry. Here’s how I baked this clay. Lay or stand your air-dry polymer clay projects on one of the surfaces listed above in an area with low humidity. I think they turned out lovely and was such a fun craft for the Holiday season. I also tried molding the terracotta air dry clay over a clear plastic ball ornament, and here is the result: Sculpey ® Air-Dry™ clay is one of two air-dry modeling clays offered by Sculpey ® — the other being Sculpey ® Air-Dry™ Porcelain Clay. You can choose between classic terra cotta or bright white air-dry clay for your next project.

Air-dry clay may develop a rougher texture as it dries, but this can be sanded to a smoother surface starting with medium sandpaper (60–120 grit) for rougher spots and then refining to fine (160–240 grit) or superfine (400–800 grit) to polish. Paper-based air-dry clays have a fluffy and lightweight texture but may have some stray paper/cellulose fibers that need to be smoothed out with sanding. ColorAir-Dry Clay can be sealed once your piece is completely dry after 72 hours. Once dry, we suggest using an acrylic varnish. Make sure to test its compatibility with the varnish before applying it to a finished piece. Many types of air-dry clay are no longer workable once dry, so for projects that will take a few days, choose earthen clay, cover the work-in-progress with a damp towel between sessions to keep it in a workable state, and rub in a bit of water to restore malleability. Adherence Air-Dry clay generally takes 24 hours to dry to the touch; 72 hours to dry completely. Drying times can be altered by environmental conditions and the size of the piece. Thoroughly dry pieces may be painted with tempera, acrylic, or watercolor.
