Sennosides displayed no specific toxicity when tested at doses up to 500 mg/kg in dogs for 4 weeks and up to 100 mg/kg in rats for 6 months. Call your healthcare provider if your constipation does not improve after 1 week of using senna, or if constipation gets worse. Do not take senna for longer than 1 week, unless your healthcare provider has told you to. The sugar moiety of the sennosides is removed by bacteria in the large intestine releasing the active anthrone fraction. This stimulates peristalsis via the submucosal and myenteric nerve plexuses. Other uses not proven with research have included weight loss, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and other conditions.

Symptoms and treatment of overdosage: The major symptoms of overdose or abuse of any stimulant laxative, including those containing senna, are griping pain and severe diarrhea, leading to excessive water loss (dehydration) and possible electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia). Treatment should be supported with generous amounts of fluid. Electrolytes, especially potassium, should be monitored. This is especially important in the elderly. In case of overdose: Call a Regional Poison Control Centre and/or your physician and/or your local emergency number immediately, or go to your local hospital emergency, even if you do not notice any signs or symptoms. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Each SENOKOT ® for Women tablet contains 8.6 mg standardized sennosides from natural senna. Senna syrup comes with a plastic cup or spoon to measure the dose. Do not use a kitchen spoon as it will not measure the right amount. How to take it If you forget a dose of senna, just skip the missed dose and take the next dose the following evening. Stimulant laxatives (including Senokot) do not help with weight loss. They do not reduce the absorption of calories or nutrients. They can cause watery stools (diarrhoea), abdominal cramps and dehydration. Dehydration can seem like weight loss. Senna has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in emptying the bowel before a colonoscopy.It is not certain whether senna is effective in treating any medical condition. Medicinal use of this product has not been approved by the FDA. Senna should not be used in place of medication prescribed for you by your doctor.
