These are common suggestions, and it is understandable why they are. They are cheap and easy. But do they work?

Absolutely sterilize all equipment in the room. Don’t just wipe it down with your chemical treatment, soak it and let it sit, everything. They hide the eggs everywhere. There is no requirement to remove animals, water or decoration from the enclosure - They will reach every nook and cranny, eating eggs, nymphs and adults Liang, G.-W. 1983. Notes on four species of mites (Acarina: Cunaxidae) in China. Nat. Enem. Inse., 5(3): 104-107. [in Chinese]

Mites are building an immunity against the traditional chemical treatments, which means eradicating snakes mites is becoming increasingly difficult. 4. Chemical treatments can be a big problem with large collections

Now here's the thing: I keep a couple of Lizards in my rep room too, on semi-bioactive substrate, so its pretty common to find small numbers of springtails in my Royals enclosures, as they can happily survive for a short while with the relatively high humidity and moist substrate (orchid bark). Whilst I didn't find any more mites, I did notice a boom in numbers of springtails. You can see where I'm going with this... I used them a lot when I was still breeding and used them again when I got my rescue as preventative ... I love them, work well for me. The problem I sometimes encountered was around delivery. They have a VERY short life span unless they get food - so if they are shipped like 1st class you can almost be assured most of them are dead by the time they arrive, especially when it gets hot (and delivery takes more than a day). You can find these for sale online, just make you buy a reptile-appropriate one and respect the dilution ratio. Also treat all the wooden branches and other decorations from the cage and discard the substrate.

Figure 8. Armascirus apophysis Chen & Jin n. sp., tritonymph paratype: A–D, leg I–IV, respectively. The main use for Taurus SC is for protection against subterranean termite infestations. To accomplish this, an outside barrier treatment is made in the ground around the foundation of the home that will protect against termites for up to 10 years or more.

Please do not use Taurrus within 2 weeks of using a chemical product. When Will I Need To Replace The Taurrus? Von Heyden, C. 1826. Versuch einer systematischen Eintheilung der Acariden. "Isis" von Oken, 18(6): 19. of Entomology, Guizhou University, Guiyang, Guizhou, 550025, P.R. China & Guizhou Provincial Key Laboratory for Agricultural Pest Management of the Mountainous Region; Scientific Observing and Experimental Station of Crop Pest in Guiyang, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the P. R. China, Guiyang 550025. P. R. China. I think springtails are eating snake mite eggs. I know a fair bit about mites, but dont know a great deal about springtails. I do know they are not predatory, but do eat "organic matter" - so my assumption is in absence of a food source within the enclosures (other than snake waste), they have been feeding on the mite eggs that have been laid around the enclosures. Snake mites rarely lay their eggs on the snake themselves, and opt for areas within the enclosure - if they have been eating them, this explains the break in the cycle of the mites, and the boom in population numbers of the springstails.
