About this deal

This was actually a highly interesting, but yet for me, a calming audiobook at a time when high stress is normally the case .... at Christmas time, when most people are running around I just sat quietly for a change, relaxed and just listened, giggling and laughing at the high wit that needs be, in a book like this. The author does touch briefly on other things, like sugar, and how this effects the body and mind, but the majority was about plain old anxiety. This is the author’s honest and vibrant account of her struggle with anxiety and what she has done to cope or manage it throughout her life. I consider it part-memoir and part self-help book.

First, We Make the Beast Beautiful: A New Journey Through First, We Make the Beast Beautiful: A New Journey Through

Sarah blogs in an intimate fashion - on philosophy, anxiety, minimalism and anti-consumerism - at sarahwilson.com, lives in Sydney, Australia, rides a bike everywhere, is a compulsive hiker and is eternally curious. This journey is what I do now. I bump along, in fits and starts, on a perpetual path to finding better ways for me and my mate, Anxiety, to get around. It's everything I do. For those of you who follow the First Steps ED blog, you might already know my resolution was to read more books (I kept it simple this year), and so far, so good! Whilst I’m not reviewing every book I’m reading because not all would be MH-relevant, it is probably quite fair to say I’m selfishly using this space for accountability, and allowing myself to reflect on the books I think have an impact. And, of course, if it helps you with your own Spring reading list then great!I created an eBook called The Anti-Anxiety Dietusing my learnings from Beast. There’s also a full list of my recipesthat I’ve shared on my blog for meals that help modulate anxiety. Some anxiety resources I recommend Readers, particularly those who only knew the beaming, sugar-free Wilson from her cookbooks, might feel quite concerned for her.

Welcome to First, We Make the Beast Beautiful - Sarah Wilson

An exploration of the chasm between the public persona of a high-functioning media personality and her private struggle with ever-lurking, crippling anxiety. You’ll never read a more searingly honest account of mental illness than this.” During this time, I flitted between nine countries, moved house seven times, attempted suicide twice, restructured my business and fell in love with a man...” loc 4943 There were definitely little moments of inspiration for me in this book, but the majority of the book didn’t feel relatable. The format of the book was confusing and felt extremely scattered most of the time. Sarah Wilson—bestselling author and entrepreneur, intrepid solver of problems and investigator of how to live a better life—has helped over 1.2 million people across the world to quit sugar. She has also been an anxiety sufferer her whole life. This is more of a 'I've been there' type of book, more of a memoire actually offering first hand experience for enduring anxiety as an integral part of your life, if you're looking for a thesis or a self help book for anxiety then this is not the book for you. Encountering the ancient Chinese proverb "To conquer a beast, you must first make it beautiful," New York Times best-selling author Wilson decided to beautify her own beast, anxiety, interviewing doctors, the anxiety-prone, and the Dalai Lama. With a 75,000-copy first printing. Library Journal In first, we make the beast beautiful, Sarah directs her intense focus and fierce investigatory skills onto this lifetime companion of hers, looking at the triggers and treatments, the fashions and fads. She reads widely and interviews fellow sufferers, mental health experts, philosophers, and the Dalai Lama, processing all she learns through the prism of her own experiences. I liked Wilson's definition of anxiety: she sees it as a separation of self from something larger and more meaningful. The anxiety makes us reach for this something, but we don't know what we're reaching for and it hurts.
